Closing Line Value (CLV) Calculator — Did You Beat the Close?
Closing line value measures whether the price you bet was better than where the line closed. Consistently beating the close is the single best long-term proxy for being a winning bettor — better than short-term win rate. Enter the price you got and the closing price on the same side; add the opposing closing price to strip the vig for a true edge read.
Beat-the-close % is how much more payout you locked than the closing price. Edge vs close is your expected return measured against the market's fair closing probability. Positive on both, consistently, is what winning looks like.

How this works
Formula
beat_close% = (decimal_bet / decimal_close - 1) × 100 ; edge = p_close_novig × decimal_bet - 1
Worked example
You bet +120 (2.20). It closed +100 (2.00). You beat the close by 10%. With the other side closing -120, the no-vig fair prob is ~47.8%, so your edge vs the close is ~+5.2%.
FAQ
What is closing line value (CLV)?
CLV is the difference between the price you bet and the price the market closed at. Beating the close means you got a better number than the sharpest version of the line.
Why does CLV matter more than win rate?
Any given bet is mostly variance, but the closing line is the market's best estimate of true probability. Consistently beating it means you're finding value the market later agreed with — the clearest sign of a long-term edge.
Should I de-vig the closing line?
Yes, when you can. The raw closing price still carries the book's vig. Entering the opposing side's closing price strips the juice, so 'edge vs close' reflects your true expected value rather than an inflated number.
What counts as good CLV?
Beating the close by 1–2% consistently is strong. Sharp bettors who get limited are usually beating the close by 2%+ across a large sample.
How do I get positive CLV?
Bet early before lines sharpen, shop for the best number across books, and act on real information (injuries, weather) fast. Parlae's +EV feed surfaces prices that are already beating the sharp consensus.
