Fantasy hockey schedule 2026-27: light nights and 4-game weeks

Every team plays 84, but not on the same nights

The 2026-27 NHL regular season runs from Tuesday, Sep 29, 2026 to Saturday, Apr 10, 2027. The schedule has 1,344 games, 84 for each of the 32 teams, spread over 185 game days.

Games played is the quiet driver of a fantasy week. Goals, assists, shots, hits and blocks all come one game at a time, and so does every points league. A player who plays 4 times in a week has four chances to score; a player who plays twice has two.

Equal season totals hide two differences that matter for the bottom of your roster: when a team plays (busy nights or quiet nights) and how its games bunch into weeks.

Light nights are where streaming pays

On 104 of the 185 game days, the NHL plays 7 or fewer games. That means at most 14 of the 32 teams are on the ice. On 33 days it plays 12 or more, so at least 24 teams play.

In a daily-lineup league, that difference decides whether an added player helps. On a heavy night, most of your roster already has a game, and a streamer can end up on your bench with nowhere to slot in. On a light night, most of your roster sits, and open lineup spots go unused. A streamer who plays on a light night fills a spot that would otherwise score nothing.

Across the league, 442 of the 1,344 games, about 33%, fall on light nights. Each of those games involves two teams, so the 32 teams share 884 light-night games, an average of 27.6 each. The spread around that average is wide.

Anaheim and Colorado each play 34 games on light nights, 40% of their schedule. Tampa Bay plays 17, about 20%. Over a season that is 17 extra chances for an Anaheim or Colorado streamer to fill an empty spot.

Weekly-lineup leagues count games per week

In a league where you set your lineup once a week, light nights matter less. Your starters play every game their team plays that week, whatever else is on the schedule. What matters is how many games land in the week.

Seattle has the most 4-game weeks with 11, then San Jose with 10 and Pittsburgh and Buffalo with 9. Montreal and Toronto have the fewest, 4 each.

The catch is that a team with many 4-game weeks often has many short weeks too. Seattle also has 8 weeks of 2 or fewer games, the most in the league, and Utah and Florida have 7. Their schedules are lumpy rather than generous. Toronto is the opposite: 4 weeks of 4 or more and 1 week of 2 or fewer. Between the partial opening and final weeks sit 26 full weeks, so at least 21 of Toronto's have exactly 3 games.

Here is what volume does to a weekly projection. On the Parlae points board, Connor McDavid averages 3.617 fantasy points a game and Anaheim's Cutter Gauthier, ranked 30th, averages 2.447. In a week where Gauthier played 4 games and McDavid played 2, Gauthier would project 9.8 fantasy points and McDavid 7.2. That is arithmetic on per-game rates, not a forecast for any week, and nobody benches McDavid over it. It is the reason a 4-game week decides close calls further down a roster.

Back-to-backs

The schedule has 377 back-to-backs across the 32 teams, an average of 11.8. Pittsburgh has the most with 15. Washington, Florida, Ottawa, Buffalo and Boston have 14. Vegas and Calgary have the fewest, 8 each.

For skaters, a back-to-back is just two games in two nights. For goalies it is a split. Last season the same goalie started both nights of a back-to-back only 35 times in 430. The goalie back-to-backs guide has every team's pattern, and it is the reason a 4-game week often means 3 starts for your goalie, not 4.

Which teams to stream from

The best streaming teams pair a high light-night count with plenty of 4-game weeks. Colorado (34 light-night games, 8 four-game weeks), Anaheim (34 and 7), San Jose (31 and 10), Chicago (31 and 8) and the Rangers (33 and 7) lead that list.

At the bottom, Tampa Bay (17), Nashville (18) and St. Louis (21) rarely give you a light-night game. That does not change how you treat their stars. Nikita Kucherov is 5th on the board and Brandon Hagel 13th; you start them every night they play. Light nights are a tool for the last two or three spots on a roster, where the players are close enough that schedule breaks the tie.

What to do with this

  1. In daily leagues, stream on light nights. On a night with 7 or fewer games, check the streamers page for available skaters whose team plays, and favor Anaheim, Colorado, the Rangers, Utah and Washington over Tampa Bay, Nashville and St. Louis.
  2. In weekly leagues, count next week's games before you set the lineup. When two players are close on the board, start the one with more games. Seattle, San Jose, Pittsburgh and Buffalo give you the most 4-game weeks; Seattle also gives you the most 2-game weeks, so check both.
  3. Plan goalies around back-to-backs. Treat one night of every back-to-back as a likely backup start, and use the start/sit page before each slate.

  • Definitions used here: a light night is a date with 7 or fewer NHL games, so fewer than half the league plays; a heavy night has 12 or more. Fantasy weeks run Monday to Sunday. A back-to-back is counted on its second night. Weeks of 2 or fewer games leave out the partial opening week (Sep 28) and the partial final week (Apr 5). Counts cover the full season, including games already played.
