Week 4 injury report: Barkley, Chase, Lamar Jackson and the replacements to know for Week 5

What was reported on every major Week 4 injury, from Saquon Barkley's hamstring to Ja'Marr Chase's concussion, and who is next on each depth chart. No severity guesses.

How to read this report

This page says only what was reported, and who reported it. An in game injury tells you a player left, not how long he will be gone. Where a team or the Associated Press gave a body part or a diagnosis, we name it. Where they did not, we do not guess.

Three sources carry every line. The official play by play marks when a player was injured and when he came back. The Associated Press recap on ESPN gives the reported injury. And Sleeper's player file gives two things: the designation it lists for the player this morning, and the depth chart order we use for every next man up. We did not name a backup without checking that order first. Designations are as of 6:17 AM ET Monday and will change as teams practice.

Atlanta at New Orleans is Monday night and has not been played.

Saquon Barkley and the Eagles backfield

Barkley was marked injured on a 6 yard run with 11:48 left in the first quarter, and he does not appear in the play by play again. The AP reported that he injured his right hamstring, and Sleeper lists him Out. He finished with 2 carries for 8 yards and a 2 yard catch.

Tank Bigsby replaced him (AP) and ran 14 times for 55 yards, 64% of the Eagles' carries. Then Bigsby himself was marked injured on a 1 yard run with 3:59 left, and the AP says he needed help off the field. Sleeper lists him Questionable with an undisclosed injury. Will Shipley is third on Sleeper's depth chart and had 6 carries for 23 yards. The Eagles play Jacksonville in London at 9:30 AM ET on Sunday, so their inactives will land before most of the country is awake.

Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins

Chase was marked injured on a 4 yard catch with 12:11 left in the second quarter and did not return. The AP reported a concussion, and Sleeper lists him Out. A concussion puts a player into the league's protocol, which has no fixed timeline.

Higgins carried the passing game after that: 11 catches for 157 yards on 16 targets, 30% of Cincinnati's targets. He was marked injured on a 19 yard catch with 5:47 left, came back for a 17 yard catch a minute later, and does not appear in the play by play after that. The AP reported a groin injury. Sleeper lists him Questionable.

Next on Sleeper's Bengals depth chart are Dohnte Meyers, who caught 7 of 9 targets for 82 yards, and Mitch Tinsley, who caught 3 of 7 for 49. Cincinnati plays at Miami in Week 5.

Lamar Jackson

Jackson's ankle appeared to roll under a Tennessee defender in the final seconds of the second quarter, the AP reported, on a sack with 12 seconds left. Tyler Huntley played the second half and went 8 of 9 for 63 yards. Before he left, Jackson was 15 of 20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, 18.9 points. Sleeper lists him Questionable and Huntley second on the depth chart. Baltimore plays at Atlanta on Sunday night, the latest Sunday kickoff of Week 5.

Rashee Rice and the Chiefs receivers

Rice pulled up limping in the first quarter and did not return, per the AP, which reported a hamstring injury. Sleeper lists him Questionable. Kansas City also lost Tyquan Thornton, who had 5 catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns before he was carted off with a left ankle injury on a 55 yard catch late in the fourth quarter (AP). Sleeper lists Thornton Out.

Xavier Worthy is second on the depth chart behind Rice and drew 7 targets for 4 catches and 70 yards. Thornton is third and Jalen Royals fourth. Kansas City is on a bye in Week 5, so none of the Chiefs receivers will score for you this week, healthy or not.

DJ Moore and the Bills receivers

The AP reported that Buffalo's offense appeared to struggle after Moore left with a shoulder injury late in the first half. He does not appear in the play by play after a target with 1:48 left in the second quarter. Sleeper lists him Questionable, with the injury undisclosed.

Keon Coleman, third on the depth chart, caught 6 of 7 targets for 116 yards and a 34 yard touchdown. Khalil Shakir, second, caught 7 of 8 for 82 yards and lost a fumble. Buffalo plays at the Rams on Monday, October 12.

Ashton Jeanty, Zay Flowers and the players who came back

Two Week 4 scares ended with the player back on the field, and the play by play says so. Jeanty was marked injured on a 1 yard loss with 3:08 left in the third quarter, and he was back early in the fourth quarter. He finished with 15 carries for 58 yards and 6 catches for 68 yards, 18.6 points, and Sleeper has no designation on him. Flowers was marked injured with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter and returned at 5:10, after a day of 8 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Neither one is a Week 5 replacement story unless the injury report says otherwise this week.

Two more quarterback and receiver changes

Marcus Mariota, starting for the injured Jayden Daniels, left Washington's game in London after the second drive. Coach Dan Quinn said it looks like an MCL injury and that it is unknown how long he will be out (AP). Sleeper lists Mariota Out with a knee injury and Daniels Out with an elbow injury. Athan Kaliakmanis, next on the depth chart, went 15 of 33 for 186 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Ladd McConkey left the Chargers' game at halftime after aggravating a foot injury (AP). Sleeper lists him Out, with Quentin Johnston and Tre' Harris next.

What to do with this

  1. Read the Wednesday practice report before you move anyone. A Monday designation is a starting point. Our injury report and actives page refresh from the same feed through the week.
  2. Claim backups only where the starter is listed Out. Among the players above, that is Barkley, Chase, Mariota and McConkey this morning; Bigsby's own status decides whether Shipley matters. The Week 5 waiver wire targets rank those claims by usage.
  3. Plan for the early Eagles kickoff. Philadelphia's inactives come out about 90 minutes before the 9:30 AM ET start in London. The hour before kickoff explains the order to check them.
