The hour before kickoff: injury news, inactives, and what to change
Inactives land 90 minutes before kickoff. Here is the order to check them in Week 1, including the Wednesday and Thursday early locks.

The one clock that matters
Every NFL team hands the referee its inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff. That is the moment a Questionable player stops being a question. Everything you read before it is a forecast, and everything after it is a fact. The whole hour before kickoff is organized around that single deadline, and a lineup that is set before the inactives land is a lineup set on incomplete information.
The designations themselves are defined by the league. Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play. Doubtful means it is unlikely he will. Out means he will not. In practice a Doubtful player almost never plays, an Out player never does, and a Questionable player is the only one worth your attention in the last hour.
Week 1 is not a normal week
The 2026 season opens on a Wednesday, and the schedule breaks the usual rhythm in two places.
New England at Seattle kicks off Wednesday, September 9, at 8:20 PM ET. San Francisco and the Rams play Thursday, September 10, at 8:35 PM ET, from Melbourne. The main Sunday slate begins Sunday, September 13, at 1:00 PM ET, with the late window at 4:25 and the night game at 8:20, and the Monday game follows on September 14.
So a Patriots, Seahawks, 49ers or Rams starter locks a full day or more before your league mates expect, and their inactives will be published Wednesday and Thursday evening while most managers are still thinking about Sunday. On Sleeper, players lock when their game begins, and a locked slot cannot be changed. If you start Puka Nacua, Christian McCaffrey or Jaxon Smith-Njigba, all three of whom carried a Questionable designation on the Parlae actives page as of Sep 3 at 8:26 PM ET, the decision is due on a weeknight.
The hour, in order
| Minutes to kickoff | What arrives | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 90 | The inactive list | Read your starters against it. An inactive starter comes out now. |
| 90 to 60 | Beat reporter notes on who is playing on a limited basis | Decide on any Questionable player who is active but limited. |
| 60 to 30 | Warmup reports for game time decisions | Last swap for a player who is active but not expected to play a full role. |
| 30 to 0 | Nothing new | Confirm the lineup saved. Stop reading. |

The order matters because the information arrives in that order. Before 90 minutes there is nothing to act on, and the time is better spent making sure your bench alternative is in a slot you can actually swap. After 30 minutes there is nothing left to learn, and the managers who keep refreshing are the ones who talk themselves out of a correct lineup.
What to change, and what not to
An inactive starter is the only forced change. He comes out, and the best available bench player at that slot goes in. The Parlae start or sit model treats this as a gate, not a weight: a player who is Out, Doubtful, on IR, on PUP, suspended or inactive cannot be the start regardless of his numbers, and the synced lineup on My Team flags him as a problem with the fix inline.
A Questionable player who is active is a harder call, and the temptation is to overreact. Active means he will dress and the team expects him to play. If he was your starter on Tuesday, and he is active, the default is to leave him in. The exceptions are a player whose role is reported as limited, a snap count cap, or a pitch count at quarterback, where the bench alternative is a full time starter. In that case the alternative is worth more than a half game of the better player.
Do not change a lineup on a rumor from a fan account. Do not change a lineup because a player looked slow in warmups on a 12 second video. Do not change a lineup at 10 minutes to kickoff for any reason other than a late scratch, which happens and is reported by the team.
The Sunday problem
Sunday's 1:00 PM inactives land around 11:30 AM ET, and the 4:25 inactives land around 2:55 PM. A player in the late window can replace a late scratch from the early window, but a player in the early window can never replace a late window scratch, because his game is already locked. So when you have two players of similar value and one plays early, start the early one, and keep the late one as your swap. This is the single most useful lineup habit in fantasy football and it costs nothing.
The night games follow the same logic in the extreme. A Sunday night or Monday night bench player is your last insurance, and a Sunday night starter has no insurance at all.
What the board can tell you before the hour
The Parlae actives page pulls designations straight from the live feed and refreshes with it, and the injury report on the board shows the same designations, the platform's word, not ours. On Sep 3 that feed listed Josh Jacobs of Green Bay as Out, Zach Charbonnet of Seattle on PUP, and 31 players as Questionable, among them Ja'Marr Chase, Ashton Jeanty, Breece Hall and Malik Nabers. A Questionable tag on a Thursday tells you to line up your alternative. It does not tell you to bench anyone.
What to do with this
- Set every Patriots, Seahawks, 49ers and Rams starter by Wednesday evening, and check the actives page at 6:50 PM ET Wednesday and 7:05 PM ET Thursday, when those inactive lists land.
- For Sunday, make your Questionable list on Saturday and put each player's best bench alternative in a slot you can swap. Check the injury report once at 11:30 AM ET and once at 2:55 PM ET, and change only what the inactive list forces.
- When two starters are close, play the one in the earlier window and hold the later one as the swap. Then stop reading at 30 minutes to kickoff.
