Elton John as a baseball player: scouting report
Elton John has already played Dodger Stadium. His two concerts there in October 1975 are among the most famous in rock history, and he returned in 2022 to close the North American leg of his farewell tour. In this game he moves from the stage to the hot corner. Third base wants a hitter who can handle the middle of the order, and his eye, the best mark on his card, makes him exactly that: patient, selective and very hard to fool.
He won a place at the Royal Academy of Music as a boy, and a pianist's hands bring quick, quiet wrists to the batter's box. His contact is right behind his eye and his power matches it, so he sprays line drives and punishes the occasional mistake. He also knows the business of sport. He served as chairman of Watford, the English football club he supported as a boy, and helped lead it from the lowest professional division all the way to the top flight. A player who understands how a team is built is a good one to have in the clubhouse.
His arm is the soft spot, and at third base that is a real concern on the bunt and the slow roller, so give him a strong armed shortstop beside him to take everything in the hole. His speed is limited too. First base is his next best spot and removes the long throw, and designated hitter takes the glove out of it entirely. Draft him in the middle rounds for his bat, let him hit fifth or sixth, and he will still be standing at the end of a long season.
