If Charlie Chaplin played hockey: goalie, rated 86

Charlie Chaplin would play goalie in hockey, rated 86 in Legends Draft NHL, the parody game where famous people play hockey. The position leans hardest on goaltending and defense, where Charlie Chaplin rates 87 and 81. Best attribute: skating (89). A goalie who moves like a dancer on blades. His skating is the best thing on his card, and physical play is the one soft spot.

Charlie Chaplin as a hockey player: scouting report

Charlie Chaplin would play goalie, and he is one of the few legends who has already proven he can handle himself on wheels and blades. In The Rink in 1916 he glided through an entire comic sequence on roller skates, and in Modern Times he spun blindfolded across a department store floor on skates, inches from a drop, with perfect control. That is the best skating on his card, and in a goalie it means lightning lateral pushes, clean recoveries and a butterfly that pops back up before the rebound lands.

His goaltending grade is nearly as high. The Little Tramp survived every chase, pratfall and falling object Chaplin could invent, and he did it by reading trouble a split second before it arrived. A goalie needs the same instinct. Chaplin was also a complete filmmaker who wrote, directed, produced and composed music for his own pictures, and he helped found United Artists in 1919, so his passing grade makes sense: he would start the breakout with a quick, precise outlet and see the whole ice from his crease.

Physical play is the honest weak spot. He will not win wrestling matches with big forwards camped at the top of the crease, so a drafter should pair him with a heavy defenseman who clears the front of the net. Center is his next best spot and defenseman follows, but his value is in the blue paint. Take him as your starter in the early rounds and build a structured team in front of him.
