Isaac Newton as a soccer player: scouting report

Isaac Newton would play center back, and no one would understand a high ball better. He worked out the laws of motion and universal gravitation, and a defender who knows exactly where a cross is going to come down is going to win a lot of headers. His defending is the best part of his card. He reads the flight of the ball, gets his body in position early and clears danger before the striker has even jumped.

His physical strength is right behind his defending, so he is very hard to move in a duel. An object at rest tends to stay that way, and a striker trying to back into him will find that out quickly. He also built the first practical reflecting telescope and split white light with a prism, so his eye for detail and angles is unmatched. That shows up in his passing, which grades out well enough to play a calm ball out of defense. He developed calculus and wrote the Principia, published in 1687, and later served as Master of the Royal Mint and President of the Royal Society, so he is used to running things carefully and precisely.

Pace is the weak spot. He should not be caught one on one in open space against a quick forward, so pair him with a faster center back who covers behind him and keep the line a little deeper. Central midfield is his next best spot, which suits that passing and organization, and fullback is a distant option. For a drafter, he is one of the strongest pure defenders available. Take him early if you want an aerial wall in the middle of your back four.
