PSA graded cards: what they are and how to buy one
A PSA graded card is a trading card that PSA, the largest card grader, has checked as genuine, given a condition grade from 1 to 10, and sealed in a tamper-evident plastic case with a label showing the card, the grade and a certification number. PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is the top grade. To buy one safely, match the cert number on PSA's own site, pay through a marketplace with buyer protection such as eBay, and compare a few listings of the same card and grade.Updated October 27, 2026
What a PSA graded card is
- The case: PSA seals each graded card in a sonically sealed, tamper-evident hard plastic holder, often called a slab.
- The label: the top of the case names the card (year, set, number, player) and shows the grade and PSA's certification number.
- The grade: one overall number from 1 to 10 for the card's condition. PSA grades only a card it has first judged authentic.
- The cert number: unique to that slab, so anyone can look it up on PSA's site.

The PSA grading scale
Top grades
- PSA
- Gem Mint 10, then Mint 9 and NM-MT 8
Half grades
- PSA
- 1.5 through 8.5 since February 2008; there is no PSA 9.5
On the label
- PSA
- One overall grade on the label. Centering weighs heavily in it.
Restated in our own words; the scale is compared with BGS, CGC and SGC on our grader comparison page.

PSA 9 vs PSA 10: what separates them
Centering is the clearest line between them: a PSA 10 allows the front image to sit about 55/45 off center at most, a PSA 9 about 60/40. Those are PSA's published tolerances; PSA says a grader may allow a small variance for a card's overall look, so a card near the line is a judgment call. When you buy, the grade on the label is the grade; when you grade your own, measure the borders first.
PSA 10
- PSA's name
- Gem Mint
- Front centering
- About 55/45 or better
- Back centering
- About 75/25 or better
- What it allows
- A virtually perfect card: four sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, no staining; a slight printing imperfection is allowed if it does not hurt the card's look.
PSA 9
- PSA's name
- Mint
- Front centering
- About 60/40 or better
- Back centering
- About 90/10 or better
- What it allows
- A superb card with one minor flaw: a very slight wax stain on the back, a minor printing imperfection or slightly off-white borders.
Restated in our own words from PSA's grading standards, read on October 27, 2026. PSA says a grader may allow a small centering variance for a card's overall look.

How to check a PSA cert number
- Read the certification number on the slab's label, in the listing photos or on the card in your hand.
- Enter it on PSA's cert verification page.
- Check that PSA's record shows the same card (year, set, number, player) and the same grade as the label and the listing.
- If the numbers do not match, or the case looks cracked or re-glued, do not buy it.

Where to buy PSA graded cards
- eBay carries the widest choice of PSA graded cards. A card bought and paid for through eBay checkout is covered by eBay Money Back Guarantee if it never arrives or does not match its listing.
- Eligible single cards priced at $200 and up go through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, where PSA checks the case and label before the card ships to you.
- Card shops and shows sell slabs in person, where you can check the cert number on your phone before paying.
- Our eBay safety guide walks through the checks before you buy.
Search the exact card, then the grade
- Year and set: a 2025-26 Topps card and a 2025-26 Topps Chrome card of the same player are different cards.
- Card number: the label prints it; read it together with the set and subset name, since a variation can share the base card's number.
- Parallel: a numbered parallel (/99, /25) or a refractor is its own card with its own graded copies.
- Grade and grader: a PSA 10, a PSA 9 and a BGS 9.5 of the same card are three different listings.
- Every player's card page on Parlae lists his rookie cards by year, set and card number, with a PSA 10 search for each.
Grading your own card instead
PSA's open tiers run from $59.99 a card (Standard, 90 to 100 business days) to $599 (Premier, 7 to 10 business days), read on PSA's page on October 27, 2026. Every tier, with Beckett, CGC and SGC beside it, and a break-even example of grading against buying the graded copy are on our grading cost page.
Grading fees go to the grader, and Parlae earns nothing from them. The PSA 10 links below are for buying a card already graded, on eBay, where Parlae may earn a commission.

Questions
- What does PSA 10 mean?
- Gem Mint, PSA's top grade: a card PSA judged virtually perfect in centering, corners, edges and surface.
- Is there a PSA 9.5?
- No. PSA uses half grades from 1.5 through 8.5; above that it goes from Mint 9 to Gem Mint 10.
- What is the difference between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10?
- A PSA 10 is virtually perfect, with front centering of about 55/45 or better; a PSA 9 may show one minor flaw, such as slightly off-white borders, and front centering of about 60/40, per PSA's grading standards.
- Is getting a PSA 10 hard?
- It asks for a virtually perfect card: four sharp corners, full original gloss, no staining and front centering within about 55/45, the tolerance PSA publishes (its graders may allow a small variance). PSA's population report shows how many graded copies of a card reached each grade.
- How do I know a PSA graded card is real?
- Look up its cert number on PSA's site and check that the card and grade match the label. On eBay, eligible single cards of $200 and up are also checked by PSA through Authenticity Guarantee before they ship.
- Where is the cheapest place to buy a PSA 10?
- Compare Buy It Now listings of the same card and grade, sorted cheapest first; the links below do that for the most searched players.
