Sports card gifts for kids by age

The right card gift changes with age. Young kids want lots of cards and somewhere to put them, so give a base-set Value Box and a 9-pocket binder. From about 8 to 12 they follow players: a chrome hanger of their sport and a rookie card of a young star. Teens who already collect want a mega or hobby box and a case for the best card. These are our suggestions by age, not the makers' age ratings; every pick carries its budget tier.

Budget tiers use typical retail as of October 18, 2026; prices change.

Card gifts for ages 5 to 7

Base-set boxes with the most cards, a binder and the soccer card game.

Card gifts for ages 8 to 12

Chrome hangers and Value Boxes of the sport they watch, and toploaders for the best pulls.

Three things to know before you buy

  • Match the sport and the team they follow; a rookie card of their favorite player is the most personal pick.
  • Retail boxes (Value Boxes, hangers, blasters and megas) are sold in big stores. Hobby boxes are sold through card shops and the makers' own sites.
  • Add penny sleeves and a toploader or one-touch case, so the best card in the box has somewhere safe to go.

Questions

What sports cards should I get a 10 year old?
A chrome hanger or Value Box of the sport they watch, plus the rookie card of a young player they like. At this age they start looking for particular players.

What is a blaster box?
A retail box of card packs sold at big stores like Target and Walmart, smaller than a hobby box. Blaster, mega, hanger and Value Boxes are all retail formats; a 2025 Topps Chrome Football Mega Box holds 7 packs of 6 cards.
