Elon Musk as a baseball player: scouting report
Elon Musk plays second base, the spot for a fielder who solves problems in real time. SpaceX made a habit of landing rocket boosters upright on a pad or a drone ship so they could fly again, a feat of control many engineers once considered impractical. A second baseman does a smaller version of that every night: reading a bad hop, adjusting on the fly and putting the ball exactly where it needs to go. Fielding is the best part of his card, so the glove is the selling point.
Contact is right behind it. He would be a high average hitter who puts the ball in play to all fields, and his eye matches his contact, so he takes walks and rarely chases. There is enough speed to steal a base and stretch a gapper into a triple. Before rockets and Tesla, he cofounded Zip2 and then X.com, which became part of PayPal, and that habit of moving to the next project shows up as a restless, aggressive runner who is always looking for the extra base.
His arm is the weak spot, which is why second base suits him better than shortstop; the throw to first is short and he can lean on quick hands rather than velocity. He still slides to shortstop with a modest drop, and the outfield works as a backup. Power is middling, so bat him first or second ahead of your sluggers. Draft him once the elite middle infielders are gone and pair him with a strong armed shortstop to finish the double play.
