Thursday night lineup locks: handling TNF players and early locks in Week 2

Detroit at Buffalo locks Thursday at 8:15 PM ET with the highest total on the Week 2 slate. Where to slot those players, when their news lands, and the close call rule.

By The Parlae deskPublished 5 min read

The week starts Thursday, not Sunday

Week 2 opens with Detroit at Buffalo on Thursday, September 17, at 8:15 PM ET, at Highmark Stadium on Prime Video. On Sleeper, a player locks when his game begins, and a locked player cannot be moved into or out of your lineup. So every Lions and Bills decision in your league is due Thursday night, three days before the rest of the slate.

This is not a game you can bench around. On the DraftKings line ESPN carried Tuesday morning, Buffalo was favored by 4.5 and the total was 53.5, the highest of the 16 Week 2 games. The next highest was Washington at Dallas at 50.5. Both teams scored more than 30 in Week 1: Detroit beat New Orleans 31 to 30, and Buffalo beat Houston 36 to 31. The question with these players is rarely whether to start them. It is where to put them and when to stop waiting on news.

As of that pull, none of these ten carried an injury designation in Sleeper's player file. Buffalo running back Ty Johnson was listed Out.

Wednesday is this game's Friday

For a Sunday game, the NFL's injury report policy has teams file the Game Status Report, the one with Questionable, Doubtful and Out, on Friday. For a Thursday game it moves to Wednesday, due by 4:00 PM ET, after practice reports on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So the designations for this game arrive Wednesday afternoon, not Friday. The inactive lists follow 90 minutes before kickoff, at 6:45 PM ET Thursday.

That order makes a Thursday Questionable player the easiest Questionable call of the week. At 6:45 PM you know whether he is active, and every player from every other game is still unlocked on your bench. If he is inactive, you swap in anyone. Compare that with a Sunday 4:25 PM player listed Questionable: by the time his inactive list lands, the 1:00 PM games have already locked and your options have shrunk. So do not bench a Thursday player early because of a Wednesday designation. Line up your alternative, then decide at 6:45 PM.

Put Thursday players in their own slot, never the flex

Your flex slot takes a running back, a receiver or a tight end. That makes it the only slot that can absorb a late scratch from any of three positions. If you park St. Brown in the flex, the flex locks at 8:15 PM Thursday, and a Sunday running back who is ruled inactive can only be replaced by another running back. If St. Brown sits in a receiver slot and a Sunday or Monday player fills the flex, you keep a slot that can still move.

The same logic runs to the end of the week. The last game of Week 2 is the Giants at the Rams, Monday, September 21, at 8:15 PM ET. A player from that game in your flex is the most flexible lineup you can hold. A Thursday player in your flex is the least.

The close call rule

When a Thursday player and a Sunday player are close, start the Thursday player. If you start him and he plays, you are done. If you bench him for the Sunday player and the Sunday player is scratched, the Thursday option is already gone. The earlier game gives you information first and takes nothing away. This is the same rule our guide to the hour before kickoff applies to the Sunday windows, and Thursday is its sharpest case.

The Parlae start or sit calls follow the clock too. Each call locks at the earlier kickoff of its two players, so any pair with a Lions or Bills player in it, such as Josh Allen or Drake Maye, or Jared Goff or Bo Nix, is final at 8:15 PM Thursday. Read those calls Thursday afternoon, not Sunday morning, because a pair with a Thursday player is settled before the weekend starts.

The bench and the wire lock too

Kickoff does not only lock starters. On Sleeper, in leagues using After Games Waivers Clear, a Lions or Bills free agent whose game has begun stays locked and on waivers until Tue After Day, 12:05 AM PT the following Wednesday. If you want a Detroit or Buffalo backup as a Week 2 fill in, add him before 8:15 PM Thursday or wait a week. Our FAAB add rates guide covers when those pickups are worth a bid at all.

What to do with this

  1. Set every Lions and Bills starter by Thursday afternoon, each in his position slot, and keep your flex for a Sunday or Monday player.
  2. Read the Wednesday 4:00 PM ET injury report for both teams, then check inactives at 6:45 PM ET Thursday. Change a Thursday starter only if he is inactive.
  3. Open the Week 2 start or sit calls Thursday afternoon and settle every pair with a Lions or Bills player before 8:15 PM ET.
