Sports card terms: RC, parallels, SSP, refractors and 1/1s

A rookie card (RC) is a player's first card from his first season at the top level; a parallel is a recolored version of a base card; a numbered card is stamped with its print run, like 23/99, and a 1/1 is the only copy. Every term below is defined in plain words, and 12 of them carry a real card from our sourced checklists, linked to the player's card page.

Rookie cards and prospects

Rookie card (RC)
A player's first cards from his first season at the top level of his sport, in a product's base set, usually marked with an RC logo or the word Rookie. A player has several rookie cards, one per product that year.
Example: Alex Bump's 2026-27 Upper Deck MVP #235 is a base rookie card.
Prospect card
A card of a player before he reaches the top level: college, draft and minor league cards. Collected, but not a rookie card.
Example: Jac Caglianone's 2025 Bowman Chrome Prospects #BCP-154 is a prospect card, not a rookie card.
1st Bowman
A baseball prospect's first card in a Bowman product, marked with a 1st Bowman logo. A prospect card, printed before his Major League debut.
Example: Didier Fuentes's 2025 Bowman Chrome Prospects #BCP-87 is his 1st Bowman.
Young Guns
Upper Deck's rookie subset in its flagship hockey set. For most modern NHL players, the Young Guns is the rookie card collectors mean.
Example: Alex Bump's 2026-27 Upper Deck Series 1 #207 is his Young Guns rookie card.

Base cards, parallels and print runs

Base card
The standard card of each player in a set, the one every pack is built from. Parallels and inserts are measured against it.
Chromium (Chrome, Prizm, Optic)
Cards printed on a shiny metallic stock. Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, Panini Prizm and Donruss Optic are chromium sets.
Example: Andrew Painter's 2026 Topps Chrome #160 is a chromium rookie card.
Parallel
A version of a base card with a different color, pattern or finish and the same card number. Many parallels are serial numbered.
Example: Eli Raridon's 2026 Topps Flagship Football Base Clear Variation #369, numbered /10, is a parallel of his base rookie card.
Refractor
Topps' name for a chromium parallel with a rainbow sheen under light. Gold, Orange and Red Refractors and the one-of-one SuperFractor are colored versions.
Example: Mike Trout's 2011 Topps Finest Rookie Refractor Autographs #84, numbered /499, is a Refractor.
Numbered card (serial numbered)
A card stamped with its copy number and the print run, such as 23/99: 99 copies exist. A lower print run means fewer copies.
Example: Eli Raridon's 2026 Topps Flagship Football Base Clear Variation #369 is numbered /10.
One of one (1/1)
A card numbered 1/1: the only copy. Printing plates, SuperFractors and many top parallels are one of one.
Example: Ace Bailey's 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update NBA Debut Patch Autographs #DPA-AB is a 1/1.
Short print (SP) and super short print (SSP)
Cards printed in smaller numbers than the base set without a serial number, often image variations. SSPs are scarcer still. Makers rarely publish their counts.

Inserts, autographs and patches

Insert
A card from a themed subset outside the base set, inserted into packs. Inserts carry their own numbering (like KA-12) and are not rookie cards, even of a rookie.
Example: Alex Bump's 2026-27 Upper Deck Series 1 #C-102 is an insert.
Autograph (on-card or sticker)
A card signed by the player. On-card autographs are signed directly on the card; sticker autographs are signed on a clear sticker applied at the factory.
Example: Andrew Painter's 2026 Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs #RA-AP is a rookie autograph.
Patch auto and RPA
A card with a piece of game-worn or event-worn jersey and an autograph. RPA stands for rookie patch autograph.
Example: Aydar Suniev's 2025-26 SP Authentic #160, numbered /100, is a rookie patch autograph.
Redemption
A card that stands in for one not ready at pack-out, usually an autograph; the collector redeems it with the maker for the real card.
Case hit
An insert scarce enough that the maker plans it at about one per case of boxes rather than per box.

Grading and boxes

Raw, graded and slab
A raw card is ungraded. A graded card has been scored by a grader such as PSA, Beckett, CGC or SGC and sealed in a plastic holder, the slab.
Gem Mint and PSA 10
PSA's top grade is Gem Mint 10. Beckett and CGC also print a Pristine 10, a step above their Gem Mint.
Population report (pop)
A grader's count of how many copies of a card it has graded at each grade. PSA and CGC publish theirs on their own sites.
Hobby box and retail box
Hobby boxes are sold through hobby shops and the maker's site and usually state guaranteed autographs or relics; blaster, mega, hanger and value boxes are retail formats sold at big-box stores.
