How the polls work
The AP Top 25 is voted by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters; first place earns 25 points and 25th earns one. The Coaches Poll is scored the same way by FBS head coaches. Neither picks the playoff: from Nov. 3 the College Football Playoff selection committee publishes its own ranking, and that ranking sets the 12-team field on Dec. 6.
