Fantasy basketball draft strategy by pick slot: all 12 spots in points and 9-cat

What each slot in a 12-team snake gets on the Parlae board: slot 1 starts with 178.9 FP/G over four picks, and slots 4 to 12 sit within 3.6 of each other.

How the snake sets your picks

In a 12-team snake draft the order reverses every round. Slot 1 picks 1st and 24th, then 25th and 48th. Slot 12 picks 12th and 13th, then 36th and 37th. What changes by slot is where in each round you land and how long you wait.

The names below come from the Parlae board, which ranks players per game from real 2025-26 box scores under each player's current team. It is the board's order, not ADP. A room that drafts differently will move players earlier or later, so read each slot's names as the tier to expect, not a promise of the player.

Source: Parlae fantasy basketball board, Oct 12 2026. "First two" and "First four" add the FP/G of the board player at each pick, in board order.

The gap from the best four-pick start to the worst is 13.7 FP/G: 178.9 for slot 1, 165.2 for slot 12. Nearly all of it sits in the first three slots. Slots 4 through 12 land within 3.6 FP/G of each other, and slot 8 (168.8) finishes ahead of slot 4 (167.7). You can see the full order on the points rankings.

Where this board drops off

Round 1 runs from 62.1 FP/G down to 44.3, a 17.8 spread. Round 2 spans only 3.2 (44.0 to 40.8). The drops that matter:

  • Picks 1 to 3: Jokić 62.1, Dončić 57.7, Wembanyama 53.4, Gilgeous-Alexander 50.4. Each step costs 3.0 to 4.4.
  • Picks 5 to 8 are one shelf: Antetokounmpo 49.1, Maxey 48.6, Cunningham 48.6, Jalen Johnson 48.3, 0.8 apart.
  • After pick 8: Johnson 48.3 to Kawhi Leonard 45.7, a drop of 2.6, the last cliff in round 1.
  • Picks 9 to 15 are one shelf: Leonard 45.7 down to Edwards and Şengün at 43.9, 1.8 apart.

So slot 9 sits just below a tier drop, and slots 9 through 12 draft from the same shelf as the first picks of round 2. Slot 12's two players (44.3 and 44.0) trail slot 9's first pick by 1.4 and 1.7 FP/G.

Slots 1 to 3: take the name, then plan the wait

Slot 1. Jokić is first in both formats: 62.1 FP/G, a 10.6 9-cat z-score, and 65, 70 and 78 games over the last three seasons. Then you wait 22 picks. The board's names at 24 and 25 are Adebayo (73 games) and Paolo Banchero (40.8 FP/G, but 111th in 9-cat), and at 48 Stephon Castle (149th in 9-cat). In 9-cat leagues the board hands slot 1 Austin Reaves, Michael Porter and Tyler Herro instead.

Slot 2. Dončić, 57.7 FP/G in 64 games. The board's pick at 23 is Lauri Markkanen at 41.2, who played 42 games last season and carries a GTD (neck) tag on Sleeper. You pick again at 26, where the board has Jalen Brunson, who played 74, 65 and 76 games. Pair the games risk with a steady player.

Slot 3. Wembanyama scored 53.4 FP/G in 29.2 minutes. His 65.9 fantasy points per 36 minutes is the highest in the board's top 200. The board follows with LeBron James (age 41) at 22 and Karl-Anthony Towns (75 games) at 27. The pick at 46 is Brandon Ingram, listed Out (heel). Go in expecting to take the next healthy name: Derrick White and Castle are the board's 47 and 48.

Slots 4 to 12: the middle and the turn

Slots 4 to 8 get even spacing. Slot 6 picks 6, 19, 30 and 43, gaps of 13, 11 and 13, so you never sit long.

Slot 5 is where formats split hardest. Giannis Antetokounmpo is 49.1 FP/G and 5th in points, but 50th in 9-cat: he shot 65.0% at the line for a free-throw z-score of minus 4.5, and he played 36 games. In points he is the pick. In 9-cat the slot 5 name is Tyrese Maxey.

Slot 7 takes Cunningham, then Harden (age 37) at 18 and Devin Booker at 31. The board's pick at 42 is Jimmy Butler, listed Out (knee). Chet Holmgren and Alex Sarr are next on the board.

Slot 8 has the best middle total. Jalen Johnson played 72 games, Avdija 66 at pick 17, Cooper Flagg 70 at 32, and Trey Murphy at 41 is 11th in 9-cat.

Slots 11 and 12 work the turn. Slot 12 picks 12 and 13 back to back, then waits 22 picks to 36 and 37. The board's pair is Mitchell, a guard, and Anthony Davis, a center who played 20 games last season after 51 and 75. If 20 is too thin, Şengün is the next center on the board, 43.9 FP/G and 72 games, 0.1 behind Davis. Slot 11 opens with Joel Embiid, 44.5 FP/G but 38 games last season and 19 the year before. If you take him, slot 11 picks again at 14 with Şengün one spot past the board's pick there.

The back slots earn some of it back. At 37 and 38, slots 12 and 11 still get Jalen Duren and Keyonte George at 38.2, which is 3.0 FP/G more than slot 1's Castle at 48 (38.2 minus 35.2).

In 9-cat, the edge reaches slot 6

The 9-cat top six by z-score are Jokić 10.6, Wembanyama 9.6, Gilgeous-Alexander 8.4, Leonard 7.2, Maxey 6.9 and Dončić 6.2. Then Mitchell is 4.3, a drop of 1.9. Add each slot's first two 9-cat picks and slot 1 starts at 12.7, slot 6 at 9.2, and slots 7 through 12 all land between 7.0 and 7.4. In points the edge belongs to three slots. In 9-cat it belongs to six.

Points first-rounders who slide in 9-cat: Antetokounmpo to 50th, Jaylen Brown to 56th, Cunningham to 16th and Jalen Johnson to 17th. The 9-cat rankings show the full order with category z-scores.

On draft night

  1. Know your shelf. Slots 1 to 4, take the board's name. Slots 5 to 8, the 48.3 to 49.1 FP/G group is one tier. Slots 9 to 12, the 45.7 to 43.9 shelf is flat, so let games played break ties within a position.
  2. Write three names for each of your next picks, the board's player plus one pick on either side, because your room will not follow the board.
  3. Check the tags before the clock starts. Ingram and Butler are listed Out, and Markkanen is GTD. The injury page updates from Sleeper.
  4. For rounds 3 and later, use best values by round to see where each round's FP/G flattens.
