FPL captain strategy 2026-27: Haaland every week so far, and when the armband should go elsewhere
Haaland has been the most-captained FPL player in all six gameweeks, owned by 8.2 million managers. What he returned, and how to pick a captain each week.

Why the captain is the biggest weekly decision
Your captain's points count double. In a game where the average manager has scored about 60 points a gameweek this season, that one choice is worth more than any single transfer, every week, for nothing. It is also the decision where following the crowd is safest and leaving it is riskiest, because whoever most managers captain does a lot to decide how the average manager does.
The crowd's captain, every week
The game names its most-captained player each gameweek. In 2026-27 it has been the same man six times.
| Gameweek | Haaland's opponent | His points | Captain points (x2) | Managers owning him | Average manager score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bournemouth (H) | 2 | 4 | 6,209,794 | 50 |
| 2 | Crystal Palace (A) | 13 | 26 | 6,731,685 | 81 |
| 3 | Coventry City (H) | 9 | 18 | 7,594,638 | 51 |
| 4 | Man Utd (A) | 9 | 18 | 7,610,939 | 69 |
| 5 | Sunderland (H) | 6 | 12 | 7,989,349 | 48 |
| 6 | Liverpool (A) | 6 | 12 | 8,207,626 | 58 |
| **Total** | **45** | **90** | **357** |

Captaining him every week returned 90 points across six gameweeks, 15 a week. He scored in five of the six. The one blank was Gameweek 1, a 2-point week that cost every one of his captains together.
His ownership rose every week, from 6.2 million managers in Gameweek 1 to 8.2 million in Gameweek 6, 75.2 percent of everyone playing as of Oct 13. That number is the heart of captain strategy.
Effective ownership, without the jargon
When three in four managers own a player and many of them captain him, his points barely move your rank. If he scores 13 and you captained him, you gained 26 points, but so did several million others. What changes your rank is the points you score that most rivals do not.
So there are two ways to pick a captain:
Shield. Captain the player the crowd captains. If he hauls, you keep pace; if he blanks, so does everyone. This is the right default when he has a good fixture, because the cost of missing a big week is large and shared by almost nobody.
Swing. Captain someone else. If your choice outscores the crowd's captain, you gain on millions of managers at once; if not, you lose ground on all of them. This is worth it only when the alternative's projection is close to or above the favourite's, not because a different name feels brave.

Haaland at home to Ipswich is the shield, and the projection agrees with the crowd for once. The two Brighton players are the swing: within 0.1 and 0.4 points of him, at home to Palace in one of the two fixtures Parlae grades 1, the easiest, this week, and owned by about half as many managers. A De Cuyper captaincy is a defender's armband, which is unusual, but he has 2 goals, 3 assists and 4 clean sheets in six matches, 53 points, more than Haaland's 45.
A routine that takes five minutes
- Open the captain projections after the last press conferences, the day before the deadline.
- If the top projection is also the most-owned player, captain him unless your rank needs a swing.
- If another player is within half a point and owned by under half as many managers, that is a real swing; take it only if you are chasing.
- Check minutes before anything else. A projection already cuts for doubt the game lists, but late team news can still move it.
- Pick a vice-captain who plays in a different match, so a late withdrawal still leaves you covered.

The triple captain
The triple captain chip triples the captain's score for one gameweek. Our chip strategy guide covers how the 1,787,071 managers who used it in Gameweek 3 did. The short version: it rides on one match, and the best weeks for it are double gameweeks, none of which is scheduled yet.
