Eight chips, two halves
Fantasy Premier League gives every manager four chips in each half of the 2026-27 season, eight in all. The game's own chip list sets the windows:
| Chip | What it does | First window | Second window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wildcard | Unlimited free transfers for one gameweek; the new squad stays | Gameweek 2 to 19 | Gameweek 20 to 38 |
| Free hit | Unlimited free transfers for one gameweek; the old squad returns after it | Gameweek 2 to 19 | Gameweek 20 to 38 |
| Bench boost | Your four substitutes' points count too | Gameweek 1 to 19 | Gameweek 20 to 38 |
| Triple captain | Your captain's points are tripled instead of doubled | Gameweek 1 to 19 | Gameweek 20 to 38 |

A first-half chip not played by the Gameweek 19 deadline (Jan 1 2027) is lost. Only one chip can be played in a gameweek. With 13 deadlines left in the first window (Gameweeks 7 to 19), a manager holding all four needs a plan for all four.

Three patterns:
- The bench boost went early. 814,606 boosts in Gameweek 1, the most of any week, when every new squad's bench was full of players chosen days before. No week since has reached half that, and Gameweek 6 had the fewest, 121,353.
- Triple captain had one huge week. 1,787,071 in Gameweek 3, more than five times the next-busiest week, which is the subject of the next table.
- Free hits were used as a second wildcard. 421,239 in Gameweek 3 and 328,740 in Gameweek 4, with no blank or double gameweek in either. As of Oct 13, every team plays exactly once in each of Gameweeks 1 to 38 on the published list, so no free hit this season has yet been played into a blank.

The Gameweek 3 triple captain, checked
The most-captained player in every gameweek so far has been Erling Haaland. Here is what he scored, and what the chip turned that into.
| Gameweek | Opponent | Result | Haaland points | As captain (x2) | As triple captain (x3) | Average manager |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bournemouth (H) | Won 2-1 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 50 |
| 2 | Crystal Palace (A) | Won 4-1 | 13 | 26 | 39 | 81 |
| 3 | Coventry City (H) | Won 1-0 | 9 | 18 | 27 | 51 |
| 4 | Man Utd (A) | Won 1-0 | 9 | 18 | 27 | 69 |
| 5 | Sunderland (H) | Won 5-3 | 6 | 12 | 18 | 48 |
| 6 | Liverpool (A) | Won 3-0 | 6 | 12 | 18 | 58 |

The Gameweek 3 triple captain added 9 points over a normal captaincy, the gap between 27 and 18. That is a respectable return, but the same chip in Gameweek 2 would have added 13, and in Gameweek 1 it added 2. The home match against Coventry was the popular week; the away match at Palace turned out the better one. The lesson is not that the crowd was wrong. It is that a triple captain rides on one match, and one goal decides it.
How to time the rest
Triple captain. Its value is the captain's score in one match, so look for the highest single-match projection you will see before Gameweek 19, not the most famous fixture. Parlae's projection for Gameweek 7 has Haaland at home to Ipswich as the top captain at 7.6 points; a double gameweek, if one is scheduled later, would roughly double that and is usually worth waiting for. As of Oct 13 none is on the list.
Bench boost. It pays when all four substitutes start. That is most likely just after a wildcard, when every bench slot was chosen on purpose, and in a double gameweek. The two best plans are wildcard then boost the following week, or hold it for a double.
Free hit. Built for a blank gameweek, when several teams do not play and a normal squad would field only a few players. With no blanks scheduled yet, holding it is cheap: the window runs to Gameweek 19.
Wildcard. The squad you build is the one you keep. Our wildcard timing guide covers the fixture swings from Gameweek 7 to 12, and the fixture grid at parlae.io/fantasy/soccer/fixtures updates at every deadline.

One chip a week
Because only one chip can be played per gameweek, a manager with all four first-half chips and 13 deadlines left has room, but not much: a wildcard and a bench boost back to back take two of them, and a triple captain and free hit take two more. Planning the order now, even loosely, avoids a rush before the first window closes at the Gameweek 19 deadline, Jan 1 2027.
