FPL wildcard timing 2026-27: when 3 million managers played it, and the fixture swings still ahead

2,979,776 FPL managers played their first wildcard in Gameweeks 2 to 6. When it pays to wait, and the fixture swings from Gameweek 7 to 12.

What a wildcard does

A wildcard lets you make unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, and the new squad stays. That is the whole chip, and it is why timing matters more than with any other: a free hit squad goes back after a week, but a wildcard squad is the one you live with for the next month or more.

In 2026-27 every manager gets two. The first can be played from Gameweek 2 to Gameweek 19 and does not carry over; the second opens at Gameweek 20 and runs to the end of the season. So the question for the first half is not whether to use it but which week, before the Gameweek 19 deadline, gets the most out of it.

When managers played the first one

The game publishes how many managers played each chip in each gameweek. For the wildcard so far:

About one manager in four has already spent it. The two biggest weeks were Gameweek 4 and Gameweek 6, each with more than 760,000 wildcards; Gameweek 6 came after the longest gap between deadlines so far, 22 days from Sep 18 to Oct 10. The other three in four still hold the chip, with 13 deadlines left in its window.

Three reasons to play it, and one reason not to

A squad that has drifted. If four or five players have lost their starting place, picked up long injuries or run into a bad run of fixtures, the transfers needed to fix it cost more than the single free transfer a week gives you. A wildcard does them for nothing. The test is simple: count the moves you would make with no cost. Four or more is a wildcard week; one or two is not.

A fixture swing. Teams' schedules turn from hard to easy and back. A wildcard played just before a run of easy matches for several teams at once lets you load up on their players for the whole run. The table below is where the swings sit right now.

Price changes. Prices move on net transfers. A manager who reshapes a squad before a popular player rises keeps the lower purchase price, and sells at half of any rise. That favours playing slightly early over slightly late when a big move is clearly coming.

The reason not to: a week of news you have not seen yet. Injuries and line-ups change most in the days after a match round. Playing the chip on a Monday before the press conferences means building a squad on last week's information. Wildcard squads are best finalised close to the deadline, even if you plan them days ahead.

The fixture swings from Gameweek 7 to 12

Parlae grades every match 1 (easiest) to 5 (hardest) from the expected goals each side should score and concede. Averaging a team's grades across Gameweeks 7 to 9 and then 10 to 12 shows who is about to get easier and who is about to get harder.

Two things stand out. Brighton have the second-best six-game run in the league (an average of 2.17) and it gets better after Gameweek 9, not worse; their attackers and defenders are the obvious wildcard core for that stretch. Newcastle are the opposite: a fair three games, then Fulham away, Arsenal at home and Brighton away. Anyone holding Newcastle players through Gameweek 10 is a candidate for a wildcard around Gameweek 9 or 10.

Ipswich are the biggest swing on the grid, but a 4.00 opening stretch that starts away at Man City means the swing only matters from Gameweek 10.

A simple way to pick the week

  1. Write down the squad you would have with no transfer cost.
  2. Count the moves between it and your current one. Under four, use free transfers instead.
  3. Look at the grid for the next five or six gameweeks for every team in that new squad. If most of them get easier in two or three weeks, wait; if they are easy now, go now.
  4. Avoid the week before a known blank or double gameweek unless your new squad is built for it. As of Oct 13 the fixture list has every team playing once in each of Gameweeks 7 to 12, so there is no blank or double to plan around yet.
  5. Finalise on deadline day, after the press conferences.

The second wildcard

The second wildcard opens at Gameweek 20 and is usually most valuable later, when the fixture list fills in double gameweeks after cup rounds are rearranged. Until those dates are published, there is nothing to time it to. The first one, by contrast, has to be used by Gameweek 19 or it is gone, and 8,102,536 managers still hold it.
