FPL defensive contribution points: who hits the threshold, match by match, in 2026-27

Kobbie Mainoo reached the 12-action bar in 5 of 6 matches; Bobby Thomas, a 4.0m defender, in 4 of 6. The FPL defensive contribution rule and who earns it.

The rule in one paragraph

Fantasy Premier League pays 2 points to an outfield player who reaches a defensive threshold in a match. For a defender the threshold is 10 actions counting clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles. For a midfielder or forward it is 12, and ball recoveries count as well. Goalkeepers cannot earn it. The 2 points are paid once per match however far past the bar a player goes, so 22 actions are worth the same as 10.

That makes it different from every other way to score. Goals and assists are rare and lumpy; a defensive contribution is common and steady for the right player, and it does not depend on his team keeping a clean sheet. A defender at a team that concedes often can still bank 2 points most weeks.

Who reaches it, match by match

The game reports each player's defensive actions per match. These eight have the highest rates among regular starters with at least 360 minutes:

For Bobby Thomas, 8 of his 28 points have come from this rule alone. That is the case for him in one number: a 4.0m defender at a team that has conceded 11 goals in six matches is still returning points, because the rule pays him for the defending he has to do.

Mainoo is the most reliable earner on the list, 5 of 6 matches; the one miss was a 23-minute appearance. His match totals were 1, 15, 15, 13, 12 and 17.

How steady is steady

A player's rate per 90 is not the same as hitting the bar every week, because the count varies from match to match. Egan's six matches read 21, 13, 7, 14, 4 and 6: one of the two highest single totals on this list, and also three misses. Janelt's read 13, 10, 12, 20, 9 and 14, and a midfielder needs 12, so the 10 and the 9 missed by a whisker.

Parlae's projection treats each player's actions as a Poisson count at his per-90 rate and asks how often that count reaches the bar. Here is how that estimate compares with what actually happened:

Six matches are a small sample, and the two columns sit within a match of each other in every row. The model is a reasonable guide to who will keep earning, not a promise for any single week.

Who it suits

Cheap defenders at leaky teams. The usual reason to avoid a defender at a side that concedes is the lost clean sheet. Defensive contribution points soften that: Bobby Thomas of Coventry (4.0m) and John Egan of Hull (4.1m) are both on the list above. In a budget squad they are a steady 2 points a week on top of the appearance points.

Holding midfielders. Before this rule a defensive midfielder scored almost nothing beyond his appearance. Mainoo and Janelt are now worth a look as fifth midfielders at 5.0 to 5.5m, especially when their teams have the fixtures to add an occasional attacking return.

Not forwards. No forward has a rate near the bar of 12. The highest among regular starters is under 8 per 90, so the rule adds almost nothing at that position.

Where to find the numbers

Every player page on parlae.io/fantasy/soccer prints his defensive actions per 90 and the projected points the rule adds for the next gameweek. The budget picks guide for Gameweek 7 uses the same numbers to rank the cheapest defenders.
